

In the fall of 2013, Aztec Student Union will open its doors to the Aztec community as the new living room of campus, serving as a hub for studying, socializing, connecting, relaxing, eating, and a much-needed coffee break. Students, faculty, staff and alumni alike will get to enjoy the state-of-the-art, LEED Platinum-certified building that replaces Aztec Center, which admirably served San Diego State University from 1968-2011. March 22 – Final grade
Waterproof Elevator 3 and 4 pit walls. Waterproof Area D foundation walls in harvest tank area. Place rebar in Area A and Area B footings. Pre-tie wall reinforcement for Area A and Area B foundation walls. Excavate for storm drain in Aztec Circle Drive. Place slab-on grade in Area D at basement level. Place wall pour 14. Continue excavating footings at loading dock. Set templates at X line footing and prep for concrete. Install footing sleeves at Area B.
March 21 – Pump up the jam
Re- set wall panels for Area C foundation wall, WP #15. Re- set wall panels for Area B foundation wall , WP #14. Waterproof Area C foundation walls. Excavate for storm drain at west end of Aztec Circle Drive. Install footing drain for Area B and Area C foundation wall. Pump out rain water from footing on X line. Set carriers for rebar rack and template across X line footing. Place rebar in X line footing. Excavate footings in loading dock area. Continue interior backfill in basement Area A and Area B.
March 20 – Step up with prep
Waterproof Area C foundation walls. Prep slab-on grade for basement Area D.
March 19 – So long, winter!
Rain delay today due to heavy rains over the weekend and continuing through this morning. Wall pour 14 scheduled for placement today cancelled. Rain damage cleanup in Area D of basement.
March 16 – To be continue
Rough in and install sleeves in Area C foundation wall, WP #15. Continue water proofing at west foundation walls. Place rebar for Area B footings and foundation walls. Place rebar for Area D slab-on grade. Install the footing drain for Area B foundation walls. Continue to form wall pour 14. Dig footings in loading dock. Form wall pour 15. Continue to excavate and haul material for Aztec Circle Drive. Continue excavation at loading dock.
March 15 – Not to go to waste
Rough-in and install sleeves in area B foundation wall, WP #14. Waterproof Area B foundation walls. Place wall reinforcement for Area B foundation wall, WP #14. Strip footing for wall pour 14. Strip walls at wall pour 13. Continue wall forms, WP #14. Place rebar in Area B footings. Continue grading loading dock and hauling dirt to northwest side of site. Backfill northeast steam tunnel. Place 3-sack slurry mix in deepened footing on X line. Form one side of Area C foundation wall, WP #15. Continue installing waste line at loading dock. Pre-fab steam and condensate piping for connections to existing at manhole #11.
March 14 – Earth Day
Placed footings for wall pour 14, put rebar wall steel up for pour 14. Rough-in and install sleeves in Area B foundation wall, WP #14. Waterproof Area B foundation walls. Place wall reinforcement for Area B foundation wall, WP #14. Place rebar in Area B footings. Place wall pour 13. Continue to dig footings along X line. Excavate, bed, and install underground plumbing across the loading dock in Area A of basement. Continue to move earth out of loading dock area. Continue to move earth out of Aztec Circle.
March 13 – Storm brewing
Lay out sleeves for Area A and Area B foundation walls. Start waterproofing Area B foundation walls. Place reinforcement for Area A foundation wall. Complete backfill of sewer and storm drain piping at northwest corner of the site. Strip wall pour #10. Start footing excavation along X line. Place wall forms for wall pour #13. Install Stago wrap at Area D slab-on grade basement. Excavate, install sleeves and piping for footing drains in Area A and Area B of basement. Weld anchor on existing steam and condensate piping in utilidor adjacent to Student Services East.
March 12 – Perfect Ten
Rough in and install sleeves in Area C foundation wall, WP #13. Adjust under slab conduit stubs in Area D of the basement. Continue with backfill around Area D foundation walls. Continue to roll in the ramp going into the courtyard, basement level. Continue grading and compacting Aztec Circle Drive in preparations for footings. Telebelt base material at Area D basement, slab on grade. Placed wall pour #10. Complete sub grad at slab-on grade Area D. Weld the anchor on steam and condensate piping in the utilidor adjacent to Student Services East.


Construction on the Aztec Student Union will affect the use of Aztec Circle Drive and nearby parking lots. Please take note of these important changes that went into effect on June 1, 2011:

Spring is finally here, and on this summer-like day here’s what we know:
*A somewhat major milestone is scheduled for tomorrow with the pouring of the slab-on grade in Area D of the basement. Yes, it is the basement, but it’s still the first actual walking surface in the new building.
*Work on the storm drain in Aztec Circle Drive began today.
*A pre-cast manhole could be placed in the northeast steam tunnel as early as next week.

As vertical construction on the Aztec Student Union continues to make progress, the Associated Students Facilities Board is mapping out details of the interior design. The board met Monday to take a final vote on what the room names will be and discuss plans for a time capsule that will be buried once construction is completed. Each floor of the student union will have a theme. The bottom floor’s room names will represent Aztec history, the second floors will represent San Diego State history and the top floors will represent the history of AS. SDSU professors specializing in Aztec tribal history were consulted to verify the cultural significance of the names selected.
